fucking democrats, i declare

Here’s a headline in today’s Washington Post:

Democrats consider one-week impeachment trial, censure resolution after GOP signals likely acquittal of Trump.

And here’s the lede:

Bracing for the prospect of a likely acquittal, Senate Democrats are eyeing a rapid-fire impeachment trial for former president Donald Trump — as short as one week — while also contemplating alternatives such as censure that could attract more support from Republicans.

Fucking Democrats, I declare. This is the sitch: 1) the former president, having lost the election, after repeatedly making blatantly false claims of fraud, tried to stop the certification of the fairly elected new president by inciting a riot IN the US Capitol Building, which directly threatened the life of his own vice-president AND the Speaker of the House–a riot in which people died. 2) Democrats in the House filed an article of impeachment. 3) Republicans said “Nuh uh, not gonna happen.” 4) Democrats acknowledge defeat, consider censure instead, hoping for support from Republicans.

Democratic leadership, you guys suck. Don’t look for support from Republicans; look for support from the people who fucking VOTED FOR YOU. The Republicans are right not to respect you, because you don’t respect yourselves. Worse, you don’t respect us, the people who voted for you. We voted for you to stand up and do what’s right, to fight for what’s right, even if you might lose. Even if you know you’re going to lose. You guys think it’s somehow better to negotiate a surrender than take a chance on losing a fight.

You can’t negotiate with terrorists. Jesus suffering fuck.

A couple of days ago, Mitch McConnell, who is no longer in charge of the Senate, made this threat: “I made clear that if Democrats ever attack the key Senate rules, it would drain the consent and comity out of the institution. A scorched-earth Senate would hardly be able to function. It wouldn’t be a progressive’s dream. It would be a nightmare. I guarantee it.”

This guy? You’re letting this guy intimidate you? This pale, pasty, withered old fart? Fucking Democrats, I declare.

He feels confident enough to guarantee it because he knows you guys crumple like tissue paper when confronted. This is the same guy who openly pissed all over the key Senate rules. He reduced the hearings on Trump’s judicial appointments from thirty hours to two. Two hours to debate judges, some of whom the American Bar Associate said weren’t qualified. Two fucking hours. He got rid of the filibuster for Supreme Court nominations, which gave us Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett. He used the reconciliation process to pass Trump’s tax break for the rich legislation. And now he’s threatening Democrats if they attempt to do the same thing?

Listen, you won the election. I shouldn’t have to repeat that, but I will. YOU WON THE ELECTION. We have a Democrat as president. Uncle Joe may not be the greatest, but he’ll do the damn job IF YOU HELP HIM. You have a majority in the House and you control the Senate. I’m going to say it again. You won the damned election. ACT LIKE IT. Impeach the motherfucker. Put the entire Republican Party on trial, since they supported him. Put them on record as supporting an insurrection. Get all the evidence out, let the people know what happened. If it takes two weeks–if it takes a whole month–to get all the evidence out, then do it. Don’t back down just because you’re afraid of losing. And pass Biden’s proposed legislation, even if you don’t have any Republican support (and c’mon, do you really expect you’re going to get much Republican support?). When Republicans whine about ‘unity’ don’t even bother to remind them of what they’ve done in the past. Just fucking ignore them and do your goddamn job.

There MUST be consequences. Consequences for the violence, consequences for the racism, consequences for lies, consequences for the hypocrisy, consequences for the misogyny, consequences for attempting to overturn the election, consequences for pissing all over representative democracy.

If you’re unable to see that FAILURE to hold these fuckers accountable will only insure that they’ll continue to pull the same shit again and again and again, then you’re useless. If you can’t see that, then you’ve wasted our votes. And there WILL be consequences for that. Count on it. The consequence may be that you’ll lose your seats in Congress, but if you won’t do your job, that’s not much of a loss. The real consequence–the consequence that matters–will be that you contributed to the death of democracy in the United States.

  1. So Greg, what do you expect them to do within the rule of law? They need 2/3 in the Senate and they have 55% not 66%.

You’re proposing one of two things — 2+2=5, or undermining the Constitution.

Clue: those 45 GOP Senators were also elected — maybe you need to re-direct your anger at the people who elected them.

I expect them (and by ‘them’ I mean Democrats) to follow through and do their duty. The House impeached Trump for a second time. I expect them to actually wholeheartedly prosecute their case in the Senate. By filing a censure resolution, Sen. Kaine is signaling that Democrats will once again back away from a fight.

You’re proposing one of two things — 2+2=5, or undermining the Constitution.
What? I’m proposing Democrats stand up for themselves and do their jobs. How is that even remotely like 2+2=5? How is that even remotely undermining the Constitution?

those 45 GOP Senators were also elected — maybe you need to re-direct your anger at the people who elected them.
I am, of course, angry that any senator would condone the insurrection and the events leading up to it. But I didn’t vote for those senators, and I don’t expect them to do anything other than what they’ve always done — unquestioningly support Trump. I DO, though, expect Democrats to act like they’ve won the election and implement the agenda they ran on.

      • They know they don’t have 2/3 to convict in the Senate. All your calling them FUCKING DEMS won’t change that.

If you have a way to get 11 more Republicans — the people you should be angry with — to admit publicly that Trump is a crook, then they win. But those are the people violating their oaths of office, and defying the rule of law.

You can’t turn 55 into 66 by swearing. 2+2=5, Greg.

Democrats are trying to do this within the rule of law. Their duty may be to punish Trump — so what do we do, take out a hit from the mob? We are not falling to the level of QAnon on all this or anything we do just lets the idiots win harder, and the fall to fascism faster.

So again — stop with the “do their duty” BS — what specific steps within the Constitution and rule of law do you propose that we do?

I find it sad that you consider it a waste of resources to hold a public trial for a president who not only attempted to perpetrate a massive hoax on the public by insisting he’d won the election, but also spurred his followers to the degree that they attacked the US Capitol, murdering a Capitol Police officer.

The evidence is already out there.

SOME of the evidence is out there. More evidence is being revealed every day. The benefit of a trial is that the evidence is presented in a complete package and in a logical order, rather than piecemeal in news reports.

My problem with the Democratic leadership is that they seem to be doing what they’ve done in the past — cave in to GOP threats without standing up for their constituents. We elected them do a job — to effectively fight Covid, to help the working poor and the middle class, to revamp foreign policy, to balance the judiciary, to restore the Voting Rights Act, to make health care affordable, and so on. In the past, the Dem leadership repeatedly surrendered their policy decisions to Republican intransigence. It pisses me off, now that Democrats control the White House and Congress, to see them catering to Republican demands instead of the demands of the people who voted for them.

And yeah, I’ll continue to call them names because this is my venue and I get to decide how to address the issues I want to address. If you don’t like it, don’t read it.

They say all good things come to those who wait, but let me say, “Very few good things come to those who are impatient in politics.” It’s only been a couple weeks into the administration. Bloodlust isn’t going to serve you well here.

I believe that Greg is proposing that Democrats insist on the trial this time, that all the evidence be put out there and that it be made available to the public. Maybe there will even be some stealth reporters who can get the word out on exactly what the insurrection was about and who stoked it.
What do you think? Getting traitors on the record on exactly what kind of coup they are supporting might be a nice trade off for certain failure, don’t you think?

        https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/28/politics/senate-democrats-trump-impeachment-trial/index.html

There will be a trial, but if you know the fix is in on the jury, there’s not much reason to waste resources on it. Every day of the impeachment trial, we get to rehash known evidence of Trump’s complicity — and Cruz, Hawley and the Insurrection Caucus get media exposure for their lies to further rile up their base.

You say: “I believe that Greg is proposing that Democrats insist on the trial this time, that all the evidence be put out there and that it be made available to the public. Maybe there will even be some stealth reporters who can get the word out on exactly what the insurrection was about and who stoked it.”

The evidence is already out there. There have been dozens of arrests. Non-stealthed, perfectly open reporting has been ongoing for over three weeks now on who stoked the insurrection and what it was about.

        https://www.google.com/search?q=who%20incited%20the%20insurrection
        https://www.google.com/search?q=January%202021%20%20insurrection%20motivation

It is not the fault of the Dems if you don’t read. None of these sources ever had to be “stealth” and they include sources from Bill Moyers to ProPublica, to the NYTimes, to WaPo, to WSJ — all with similar conclusions.

Why do you think that there will be more than a few days of more important material than the press has already uncovered brought up in the trial?

But here are the lies on the right:
https://apnews.com/article/fact-checking-afs:Content:9920241957 — fact checking the disinfo that the FBI cleared Trump of involvement in the insurrection.

https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2021/jan/08/jonathan-wichmann/no-capitol-insurrection-was-not-staged-antifa/ — No, the insurrection was not staged by antifa.

And of course: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-55481521 — they’ll say Trump won the election and there was massive voter fraud — the “steal.”

Those lies will be pulled out in the Senate trial, and then the video of them being presented will be disseminated on the right, without the counter-evidence against them.

Not only can’t we win by the numbers, but we will not win hearts and minds. We will further stoke idiocy on the right.

        Try to think this through.

I’d love to hear how you can make a US court of any kind that has open reporting favor truth in a polarized society. Lies travel faster than the truth — it was said before social media and now it’s a thousand times more true.

  2. Time is critical. The Democrats have only two years of guaranteed control in both houses, and that by such a thin margin that Manchin and Sinema have an effective veto. There’s a huge amount of actual work to do — defeating the pandemic, economic relief, Medicare expansion, DC and Puerto Rico statehood, a new voting rights act, and on and on. There is now zero chance of an impeachment trial leading to a conviction, therefore any time spent on such a trial is valuable time wasted. Forget about it and leave Trump to conventional prosecution for financial crimes, which could actually send him to prison for decades. Congress needs to get back to its actual work, not waste time grandstanding on a process which has no chance of producing results.

(Get the Senate Republicans on record? They’d love that. They care only about the voters in their own states, the majority of whom are enraged at them for not being loyal enough to Trump.)

As for Moscow Mitch, as long as Manchin and Sinema won’t go along with abolishing the filibuster, he does have some actual power and there’s no point in pretending he doesn’t. Schumer did avoid giving him a commitment not to abolish it, so that’s still an option if Manchin and Sinema can be persuaded.

I’m one of those people who voted for Democrats across the board. I voted for them to solve actual problems which are actually solvable, not spend time grandstanding about things where no real results are possible, and whose significance is more symbolic than practical anyway.

    • any time spent on such a trial is valuable time wasted.

Yeah, no. I disagree entirely. I think Congress failing…or worse, refusing…to hold Trump accountable is surrendering to incipient authoritarianism. It’s not a waste or time to defend representative democracy, even if the trial fails to end in a conviction.

I voted for them to solve actual problems which are actually solvable, not spend time grandstanding

Again, I disagree. It’s not grandstanding to try to hold the president — or, in this case, the former president — accountable for his actions. Yes, there is little likelihood that the Senate will convict. That’s not the point. The point is to take a public stance against authoritarianism. To suggest we shouldn’t TRY to hold Trump accountable because we almost certainly won’t win is like saying we shouldn’t struggle against any malignant social condition because we can’t end it. We continue to fight against systemic racism even though we almost certainly won’t end it. We continue to fight against poverty and misogyny and homophobia and and and…because it’s important to fight against those things. The same is true of authoritarianism.

      • l don’t think Trump directed anyone to go into the Capital building.

He didn’t have to explicitly order–or even suggest–his followers to storm the Capitol building. The federal law on this is pretty clear. Take a look at 18 U.S. Code § 2101 and 2102.

Trump 1) traveled interstate, 2) told his supporters the election had been ‘stolen’ from him…and from them, 3) encouraged them to travel to DC, 4) on a specific date, where 5) he told them they had to “fight like hell” to stop Congress from ratifying the Electoral College results, and 6) told them to go to the Capitol building.

You can argue about his intent, but surely you’ll agree that it’s possible to violate the law without intending to.

  3. There you have it, Uncle Joe ‘may not be the greatest’. Is that code for cognitive decline? Because post G7, even those with blinkers must have noticed the President is a lemon. Certainly the world’s leaders had the rumours confirmed. And that three hour chat behind closed doors (meant to be five) didn’t have Putin quaking in his boots. I don’t know what you expect of your party. But you need to ask what those who run it were thinking when they offered up a damaged candidate for the top job. How did they manage to take the media along for the ride? Not an ethical people, the Democrats. Or the left wing media. And whether or not votes were tampered with, you have to at least wonder to what lengths such people must have gone to get the end result.

Code? Jesus suffering fuck. Uncle Joe may not be the greatest simply means he MAY NOT BE THE GREATEST president. And notice that line also included ‘but he’ll do the damn job’ which is more than Comrade Trump even attempted to do.

And please, don’t give us any of that ‘Biden was weak with Putin’ bullshit. Trump basically rolled over and asked Putin to rub his tummy. Trump SIDED WITH PUTIN against the US Intelligence Community. Trump did NOTHING when he heard that the Russian military had put a bounty on US military personnel in the Middle East.

Biden is old, but he’s competent and experienced. Trump was an incompetent amateur who had no grasp of his job and no interest in learning how to do it.

Second, Uncle Joe Biden has made his medical history available…unlike Trump, who has yet to explain his unexpected, unplanned visit to Walter Reed.
